Using a portable lighting rig at floor level is an easy way for students to experience the basic principles and practices of stage lighting. It removes the problems of safety and access when working at height and allows a greater number of students to be actively involved.
A lighting workshop using portable equipment can be easily set up in any teaching space that has blackout facilities with 13 amp sockets and doesn’t require the use of a drama studio.
The practical skills and lighting experience gained in this laboratory-style situation can easily be applied when working on a full-scale rig lighting a small presentation or show. So where do we start?
