In providing eight key areas, the exam board gives a manageable structure in the planning of schemes of work. This scheme is based on six hours contact time per week over an eight week period. The eight areas of exploration are:

- Visual, aural and spatial elements
- The social, cultural, historical and political context
- Response to practitioner
Before beginning the detailed study of the text it is vital that the students have a strong practical understanding of the two practitioners through which they will be approaching the texts. They can then apply the skills learnt in the two workshops here to all aspects of the unit.
