Teaching notation musically

In recent months there has been a veritable storm over the ways in which notation is taught in schools. What I aim to do here is outline some practical ideas for teaching notation in a musical way: I do not claim that these are the best ways to teach notation, but they are ways that work for me, and that I consider to have musical integrity. Along the way I will examine the whys and wherefores of teaching notation, and attempt to unpick the thinking processes that are involved for students.
