Roald Dahl's The BFG: A look at the book through drama

Roald Dahl’s The BFG was published twenty years ago, but remains as engaging to children today as it ever was. At moments hilariously funny, it also tells of fear, adventure, heroics and friendship, and is a fantastic source of classroom drama work.

I have written this scheme in chronological order, so if you are reading the book with the class you could deliver the lessons as you go along. However it can also be used with classes who have finished the book, and can be adapted if your reading time frame doesn’t quite match the scheme. I use games, drama exercises, storytelling techniques, improvisation and role-play to explore the themes of the book, and the scheme broadly covers all aspects of the KS2 National Curriculum Drama Objectives. There are links to the speaking, listening and group discussion and interaction objectives within KS2 English, and suggestions for extension exercises that can extend the creative learning across the curriculum.
