Dominant 7ths, diminished 7th and Beethoven's first

At AQA it’s time for a change of set work at AS level – no more Jupiter Symphony. Instead, we have to grapple with Beethoven, and the first and second movements of his first symphony.

You may think that this is quite a burden. Just when you have the measure of Mozart’s Jupiter symphony, trust an exam board to cause you more hard work preparing your teaching of Beethoven’s First: why can’t they just leave things alone for once? It’s not as though this is a radical change – it’s swapping one classical period symphony for another.
