In most schools, there will be a wide variety of reasons why students choose to do GCSE music. It may be that they are already accomplished musicians who have lessons on an instrument and have extensive theoretical knowledge and performing experience, whether in classical, rock, or world music spheres. Others may be won over by the sheer brilliance of your Key Stage 3 provision. Some (although let’s hope it isn’t many) might choose music as the lesser of the available evils. Hopefully all that choose it love it, albeit in different ways. For that, we music teachers should be grateful; not all subjects are motivated by that same passion.
