Pastoral care in staging the school production – Rhinegold Publishing

Pastoral care in staging the school production

£3.45

The role of teacher-director is a challenging, multifaceted one. Managing young people preparing for any team exercise is a complex task and, on top of this, there are few other roles in a school context where the creativity of an individual teacher will be so publicly on show. Strong direction requires individual and sometimes uncompromising vision, whereas our work as classroom practitioners more often involves facilitating the ideas and instincts of our students.

This combination of factors can make directing school productions draining. The very mechanics of theatre as a medium, however, teach us that process and product must be one and the same. So, in a time-pressed production schedule, how can we empower and locate young actors at the heart of the experience, while maintaining a firm steer on what is often a large-scale enterprise?
