Edward Gordon Craig was a visionary of theatre. Born 1872 in Stevenage,
the son of an architect and the celebrated actress Ellen Terry; theatre and art were in his blood. He began his professional career as an actor with Henry Irving’s vompany, but soon left to expand his artistic talents.

At the end of the 19th century, theatre was fixated with recreating ‘reality’ on stage, both in performance and design. Craig argued that ‘theatre’ came from the Greek word ‘to see’ not ‘to hear’, and thus theatre should be embedded in image.
