This scheme of work uses John Green’s powerful novel as the basis for GCSE devised work. The scheme uses a range of techniques to explore the novel and employs the story as a springboard to create devised work around the themes of the novel and also on issues this work raises. Students do not need to read the complete novel; the summary provided is sufficient. This scheme could be used to begin a unit of devising work to explore different techniques based on a powerful idea.
The sessions are based on one-hour lessons; however, the scheme runs cohesively so that each activity can be linked to the next and timings can be lengthened or shortened depending on the outcome of the students’ work.
N.B. The theme of the novel is obviously hard-hitting and you may have students who have first-hand experience of the issues raised. However, the idea behind the scheme is to tackle something gritty and real.
