Written in 1799, Beethoven’s Septet has many of the stylistic and structural hallmarks of chamber music of the Classical period.
In various aspects the work foreshadows ways that 19th century composers were going to move music forwards into the Romantic era, not least in an expansion of the classical string quartet model, seen in the scoring and the fact that Beethoven wrote six, rather than four, movements for his Septet, as well as in some of the detail.
