Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter

This scheme of work uses Nights at the Circus to give students ideas for their own practical work.
The scheme uses both on and off text work, and focuses on a range of skills including monologue,
devising, improvisation and ensemble work. The activities included will inspire students to create
their own dynamic and innovative theatre. The work can be used as an introductory scheme into
students’ devising or can be used as an initial exploration into scripted work.
Students will not need to have read the novel or the play and although as a teacher a good
working knowledge of the texts would be useful, it is not essential. This scheme primarily refers to
the play text, but in some places I have referred to the novel.
