Canons and rounds appear frequently in music education, from the classroom singing of simple rounds such as London’s Burning and Frère Jacques to GCSE and A level set works by composers such as J.S.Bach, Webern, Bernstein and Steve Reich.
However, when composing using notation or sequencing software, canons, despite being fairly easy to create using cut and paste techniques, do not always produce a convincing result. So how can you teach students how to write successful canons?
